He was late. He took too long. How could’ve he been so stupid…

Sitting in the vacated apartment, Neal stares at the empty bottle in his hands. There are so many questions – did she wait? Why leave him now? Could he have changed her mind?

None of it matters anymore.

Two days too many. She is gone.

Suddenly, he hears the sound of the door opening. Neal tenses up as the full impact of the situation hits him.

They found him. It’s over; he’s going back. And he couldn’t care less.

“I see Kate moved out. Imagine that.”

What…

“Hey Neal. Nice bottle. Did Kate leave you that?”

Neal drops his jaw. “Keller?!” he manages at last.

“In person. Long time no see, Caffrey,” says Keller cheerfully.

That smug face… Neal nearly throws the bottle aside as he thrusts Keller against the wall.

“What the fuck are you doing here? Where’s Kate?!”

Keller laughs at him. “Whoa. Easy, Neal.”

“I swear, if you did anything to her…”

Keller gives him a disgusted glare. “Ya think I’d be stupid enough to come here in that case? Ah well, maybe.” Pushing him aside, Keller frees himself from Neal’s grip. “Let’s talk business.”

“Like hell,” Neal snarls, grabbing Keller’s shirt. “Where is she? And what are you doing here?”

“Okay already! Jeez,” says Keller with an over-exaggerated sigh. “Your girlfriend got herself into some sort of a mess.”

“What? What are you talking about?” Kate is in danger?

“Someone’s after her. I knew you’d run once she broke up with you, so I paid someone to watch. Surprised it took you so long, actually. I have to say Neal, you’re awfully predictable when it comes to her–”

“Who’s after her? What else do you know?”

“I know she’s toxic,” says Keller darkly. “Word is, she went to that short pal of yours for help. They pulled him out of the Hudson three days ago.”

“What? No, that’s not… that’s not possible. You’re lying!” God, Mozzie…

“Listen Caffrey, I’d love to chitchat, but the feds could be here any minute. We’ve got to go now.”

Neal gasps for breath and collapses against the wall. This can’t be happening…

“So what do you want, Matthew?” he asks evenly when he pulls himself together. “What is your endgame in this?”

“We were damn good once. We could be again.”

“Not happening,” says Neal sharply.

“You think you’re in a position to turn me down? Oh come on, Neal,” says Keller with a snort. “You’re a wanted man. Your girl’s gone, the feds are after you, your remaining friends are in hiding... Just look at yourself, sitting here moping! You’ll be caught before today’s up.” Then he smiles. “I on the other hand have resources. Money, contacts, safehouses, everything you so desperately need right now.”

Neal scoffs. “Let me guess: you’re offering them to me out of the goodness of your heart.”

“The goodness of my heart? Hell, no.” Keller sighs. “Fine, I admit it. I messed up all those years ago. I was impatient, I may have acted rashly–”

“You shot a man,” Neal snaps at him.

“The past is the past,” says Keller with a shrug. “I’m a different person now. I’d like to earn your trust back. So what do you say, Neal? Partners again?”

“I say you’re a sociopath and a killer, and I was an idiot for not seeing it earlier.”

“You break my heart, Caffrey,” says Keller flatly. “Look, whether you join me or not, we should really get out of here. The feds, remember?”

Keller has a point.

Neal swallows, suddenly overcome by a wave of despair. The Marshals, the FBI, everyone will be after him. He prays that Mozzie is just in hiding. And Kate –

Kate needs him.

“You’ll help me find Kate and get that target off her back.”

Keller shrugs impatiently. “Fine, if that’s what you really want… I said I wanted your trust back. Now, are you coming or not?”

To pair up again.

Their history was… complicated. And painful, and ugly. To work together again is asking for a disaster.

Worse than losing Kate and going back to prison?

Neal knows Keller now. He won’t let him pull him into his web again. He’ll take what he needs from him and then get out before things go too far.

And then there’s Mozzie.

He can’t be dead.

If they killed Mozzie… whoever they are…

He will ruin them. He will destroy them until they regret they ever heard the name Kate Moreau or Neal Caffrey. And Keller will help him if he asks.

Straightening his back, Neal gives Keller a hard look. “I’ll need a place and some new IDs.”

Keller grins at him. “It’s good to have you back, Caffrey.”

* * *

When the FBI arrives half an hour later, they find an empty apartment and no clues there. Peter questions the neighbors, but only one of them vaguely remembers seeing someone who could fit Neal’s description, and there are no cameras in the apartment’s vicinity.

Neal Caffrey is gone.

Chilling... like I already told you, Keller is sooo evil, especially when he is trying to be nice, ha!

Oh, Neal... how will you get yourself out of this mess??

Great fill :D

Heee, Keller is definitely my favorite of the bad guys :D

As for Neal... yeah, this would be a pretty dark universe. I don't see many options that would have a happy ending for him here.

Thank you for your lovely review :)

Wow, what a twist! Now you got me more than a bit curious how this team-up will play out. Will Neal find Kate? Will it end like on the show? Questions, so many questions XD Anyway, great story, with spot-on characters. BRAVA!

Honestly... I don't know. We know that Keller is very capable, so in between him and Neal, they could possibly find Kate and steal the music box. But Keller also has his own agenda, and you bet there's more to it than just "earning Neal's trust". Not to mention that Keller's a killer and a time bomb. Even if they remove the threat of Adler in the shadows, at what cost?

Thank you for your wonderful review and I'm glad you enjoyed the fic :)

Yay! Thank you so much! I love this. Keller is a great villain. I wanted to yell at Neal not to trust him, here. I always assume that whenever things are bad and Keller's around, Keller is probably involved....

Thanks for writing this for me. And yeah, it fits the "Forced to rely on enemy/rival" great, too.

I'm not sure if Keller is involved or just taking advantage of the situation. Either way, Neal is really playing with fire here. I think he knows all too well that he can't trust Keller, but he believes that he can use him without getting burned... which is likely a big mistake. With Keller around, it's not "if things go wrong"; it's a "when".

Thank you for your wonderful review and I'm glad you liked the story :)

I wouldn't be sure yet that Mozzie's really dead - consider the source of the information.
Thank you for your review and I'm happy you enjoyed the fic :)

Wow. Great fic.

I refuse to believe that Mozzie is dead, btw :-) I would love to see what happens when Neal discovers Keller had conned him.

Thank you :)

Mozzie's death certainly suits Keller - it's that necessary push to bring Neal over to his side. So maybe Keller made it up altogether... or maybe, he heard a rumor and took advantage of it - in which case, is Mozzie really dead, or has he faked his death when things got too hot? I'm leaning towards Mozzie being alive because I like him too much to kill him :D , but we honestly don't know. And neither does Neal.

That said, I really wouldn't want to be in Keller's shoes if Neal finds out that Keller lied to him.

Thank you for your review :)

Mozzieeeeeee! *resolutely believes Keller is lying*

Such a cool twist on the pilot, and a great way to fill that square! Awesome :)

Keller will always have his own agenda. I certainly wouldn't believe him about Mozzie, at least not until it was confirmed from another, independent source.
Thank you :D I'm really glad you liked it :)

Oh, don't tell me you don't trust Keller?! Isn't he like the perfect embodiment of honesty, kindness and human decency? :D

Things will definitely get interesting for Neal, and not necessarily in a good way.

Thank you for your nice review!
