Seeking beta for Ascendance of a Bookworm novel canon gen fics. Up-to-date canon knowledge strongly preferred.

I'm pretty confident (plus this is a sprawling canon that shows no signs of fully closing, to the point that perfectionist canon-compliance seems like a fool's errand), so I'm really just looking for "due diligence" -- another pair of eyes to make sure no major problems slipped past me.

Google Docs with comments enabled are the easiest way for me to share.

In the Smoke alarms poll, 80% of respondent have smoke alarms on ceilings/walls, and 16% have some in piles around the place. Ten percent have inadequate coverage. Forty percent of respondents assume it's a battery issue when they go off.

In ticky-boxes, hugs came first with 80%, followed by iridescent bubbles with 62%, and pizza with 48%. Thank you for your votes! ♥

Reading
I've put The Pursuit of... by Courtney Milan aside for now, in favour of Refuse to Be Done: How to Write and Rewrite a Novel in Three Drafts by Matt Bell. I'm hoping it will help me finish my Yuletide stories, but I'm still in the drafting section, and that's not so much my problem. Still, it has some useful thoughts. Written with pantsers/discovery writers in mind.

In audio, I started The Hymn to Dionysus by Natasha Pulley, read by Sid Sagar. It's set in ancient Thebes, and Pulley's tendency to exoticise/other her non-white characters is transposed onto othering a god, which, okay, fair enough. I'm enjoying the voice.

Kdramas
Same as last week: Undercover Miss Hong, One Spring Night, and Love Scout (ahhhh!). A delicious three-course meal. (I may have oversold One Spring Night last week when I compared it to Austen. What I meant was it's observational. It doesn't have the kinds of flashbacks you usually get in a Kdrama, showing the POV characters' thought processes and emotional reactions. Instead, it seems equally interested in everyone, in a way. The editing is so slow that it feels like a play: the actors' reactions linger on the screen, rather than the camera flicking away.)

Other TV
Finished Ponies, the spy story set in 1980s Moscow, which was great, sometimes brutal, sometimes funny. Ended on a cliffhanger. Emilia Clarke is awesome!

1000% Me: Growing Up Mixed -- a documentary made up of interviews with mixed-race kids in the Bay Area. Lovely, thought-provoking, reminded me of the movie Uproar in which Minnie Driver plays the solo mum of Māori kids.

More of The Pitt. (The latest episode was super upsetting, and it really stuck with me. It's so good.)

Rooster, a new comedy set on an Ivy League campus, starring Steve Carell and feat. unexpected Jamie Tartt. Quirky and charming (and that's despite my side-eyeing Carell because of his role in The Morning Show and my difficulty with compartmentalising). We've watched the three available episodes.

Started a rewatch of Paper Girls, which contains one of my all-time favourite narrative devices (people meeting their child selves; see also Disney's The Kid and one of Richard Bach's books). It's such a great show. I'm still so sad it was cancelled on a cliffhanger.

The first episode of the Scrubs reboot. (I never watched the original, but this is fun enough.) And some more Cheers.

Regularly scheduled Fringe and Bluey with my sister.

Audio entertainment
The usual suspects, but not much. I'm having a rest week.

Are y'all excited? We're excited.

Please do us a favor before sign-ups start and go over the new FAQ; we updated it extensively over the course of the 2025 round as we had more participation than we had ever had before, and it was our first full round of the WIP Reverse Bang as well. We're pretty sure we hit every question we had directed at us via the mod email and the Discord, so hopefully any questions you might possibly have, whether you're a new participant or a returning one, should be answered there.

Please note that we decided to start fresh regarding the block list, so even if you should have been blocked last round you're free to participate this round (and we would especially love it if you posted the projects you were supposed to post during the 2025 round this upcoming posting period starting in September, even if you don't sign up with them in the 2026 round)

Also! I'm hoping, fingers crossed, to get the 2024 and 2025 master lists sorted before the new round starts as I was able to access my broken laptop and get all my new files sorted onto my new laptop. But I also got all the fandom-specific banners I had for advertising (which will start April 1st) and if anyone would like to volunteer to make banners for more recent fandoms, please let us know!

Please feel free to boost this event once sign-ups open on other communities/blogs/Discord channels once the sign-ups actually start!

FAQ

What is the WIP Big Bang?

Good question! This is a Big Bang with one goal in mind: to clean out your fanfic drafts folder. These are stories that were unfinished for whatever reason, that authors returned to and completed, and the art that goes with them!

What is the WIP Reverse Bang?

It’s similar to the regular Big Bang, except it’s for artists to finish WIP artwork (either traditional art, digital art, fanvideos, fanmixes or filk) and get a fic in exchange of at least 1000 words.

Is there anything not allowed?

No. Problematic fandoms are fine. RPS/RPF is fine. Incest and underage pairings are fine. Graphic violence is fine. Non-con/dubcon is fine. Things like that I know have been hinted at in questions asked and as long as you tag for them, we’ll allow it. Also, canon settings with mostly OCs and original fic/art is also allowed (though it is harder to pair you with someone for fic/art). We just ask that it be tagged properly with any content warnings you would deem fit and be given the appropriate rating for the level of sex/violence there is in the fic. Just bear in mind that while original work is allowed you may not get art for it.

How many fics/art pieces can we sign up for?

We absolutely don’t mind multiple sign-ups; I know one year someone submitted 50 fics to finish, and got at least half of them done. We just ask that when you sign up with more than one fic/art piece you give each fic/art piece a unique user ID (please do not use the same ID for all your fics/art pieces...it’s important to have different IDs for the check-ins).

Will I get emails about the bang?

We only email participants when their WIP has been claimed for art/fic. Please keep this fact in mind when deciding whether you want to participate; it is your responsibility to keep track of the schedule and know when check-ins and other events in the Big Bang/Reverse Bang are taking place.

If you need a reminder about due dates, the FAQ/Schedule is pinned on top of the Tumblr and Dreamwidth blogs and we use the Discord to remind participants of important dates in the Announcements channel. The pinned post on Tumblr is updated as we add links to specific things for the Big Bang/Reverse Bang, and if you join the Discord you can choose to get pinged when we make announcements regarding the events. The Discord is open year-round to both participants and non-participants, and the permanent invite link can be found above under the schedule next to the Mod email.

On that note, if you have any questions or are having trouble communicating with your artist/author, please do email us! Our email is wipbigbang@gmail.com. We will do our best to respond quickly.

Do I need a Livejournal/Dreamwidth/AO3/etc. account to participate? Are we allowed to participate without joining the Discord?

No! You don’t have to have an account on anything to participate, though you will need to have somewhere to post your finished work. Having one or more accounts will help for you to follow what is going on with the bang (we crosspost to Dreamwidth and Tumblr and heavily use our Discord server at the moment), but they are not required to participate. You can always leave comments anonymously or with an opensource ID.

The Discord server is optional, as it is just another way to interact with your fellow writers and get updates on important dates. It’s not mandatory you join, however.

More FAQ )

I have a question/concern that’s not mentioned here.

If you need help, you can always contact a mod and we will do our best to make sure that you get your story/art finished. The best and fastest method of contact is through our email, wipbigbang@gmail.com.

We went and saw Project Hail Mary this afternoon. It was terrific. I loved it.

You can read my (positive and spoilery) reactions to the Project Hail Mary book at this post from 2024.

If spoilers matter to you, I recommend very strongly going in as unspoiled as possible, including not watching the trailer.

I posted some more Babylon 5 fic in the last couple of days: a new Londo/G'Kar fake dating fic plus a new chapter of the B5 catacomb WIP.

It's been a year this month since I started watching the show - my first post under the B5 tag was posted March 3, 2025 after watching the first couple of episodes. Still completely gone on it! I regret nothing!

In other news, NYT gift link to an article about Paul Brainerd, creator of Aldus PageMaker and inventor of the term "desktop publishing." This was a fascinating nostalgia read for me because, while I had no idea of the actual history, this guy (and Adobe and Apple) created the professional world of my young adulthood. My first job out of college in (I think) 1998 was working in the layout department of a newspaper that had just recently (last few years) gone from paste-up to an all-Mac layout room using a program similar to PageMaker from a third-party software maker that no longer exists. PageMaker - which I also learned to use in the college computer lab, and later at work - was the direct predecessor of InDesign, widely used even today. It's interesting to think back on those old newspaper days and how thoroughly they shaped me and continue to shape me. The computer/layout/marketing experience I got as a layout artist in the late 90s and 2000s has been immensely useful for my current self-publishing career.

It continues to be horrendously cold. We've been sitting under a high-pressure ridge and have had gorgeous sunny days that are absolutely freezing. It was -20F when I got up this morning and it's 0F out there right now. My husband's (uni-age) students are over here today because they wanted to help him dig out an ancient non-working snowblower that someone gave us ages ago from a snowbank and try to get it working again. (We do actually have TWO other snowblowers. This is just for fun.)

I took this picture on a walk up our driveway to the highway to get the mail a couple of days ago:

a long expanse of snow-covered road with piles of snow on each side

At least at this time of year, the sun warms it up SOMEWHAT during the day - in January it can sit at -40 24/7 for weeks; at this time of year we're still experiencing 20-40 degree increases during the day .... which is still barely enough to push us above 0F. The 10-day forecast shows that it will be glacially (haha) warming up, but still may not have crawled into above-freezing temps by the end of the month. UGH, I'M READY FOR SPRING.

Half the writing time has now gone by, and the deadline is starting to approach. How goes it, everyone? I hope all is well, but please don't hesitate to let me know if you have any questions or concerns. You have until 23:59 GMT on the 20th of April to add your fic(s) to the collection — so don't panic, there's still plenty of time.

A big thanks to everyone who has signed up so far, return participants and newbies alike!

If your writing is coming along nicely (or if you'd like to procrastinate), you can do some canon promoting here, or maybe just check out what others have posted.

Wordcount: ~114,000
Rated: Teen for swearing and violence

Summary:

They saved the ship. Now everyone wants them dead.

Jacks Harrison and chief engineer Antony Watts avoided a catastrophic collision between their generation ship Peace and their three sister ships that would have killed every human in the fleet. But saving their people came with a cost, and now Jacks and Antony are wanted by the rebellious factions that overthrew Peace’s corrupt governor.

With Peace’s two cities in shambles and neighbor turning against neighbor, Jacks and Antony must fight their way to safety only to find that the people on Peace are still in terrible danger: the ship’s water system is bleeding out, and it’s up to them to figure out how stop it.

Along the way, Jacks must reckon with the violence she finds herself too comfortable with and Antony must confront his past complicity in the corrupt regime. Because Peace doesn’t hand out easy answers, and they both have to decide how far they’re willing to go to ensure they survive.

... resulting from making that vid this past week.

One thing that I was thinking about is the sheer challenge of costuming this show, because most of the costumes are directly patterned after their manga/anime looks. So whereas most of the time in most shows, you can probably source the characters' everyday wear from basic mass-produced clothes or even vintage or secondhand shops, aside from really specific superhero costumes or whatever, this is more like a historical production in that everything has to be made from scratch. (Only, if possible, worse, because unless you're doing an unusual time period, normally you could probably go to the warehouses of Elizabethan or Regency costumes or Roman togas that no doubt exist.)

Here, even the relatively normal clothes are directly echoing something specific, like the patterns on
season 2 character'sTashigi's
distinctive shirt, or
another season 2 character'sMiss Valentine's lemon-patterned
dress.

Anyway, it's just interesting to think about. Even the simplest costumes are more complicated than they seem, because it's not just an unusual shirt that the costume people found at a vintage shop; they're having to explicitly pattern-match or color-match or style-match items from the manga and anime.

More specific spoilers about characters' fighting skills )

Babylon 5 fic: Green Growing Things

So this is apparently the latest installment in an accidental series about gardens. This is based off some bits in [archiveofourown.org profile] hauntinghouses's lovely post-canon fixit Out of the Woods (not necessary to read before this one, but you should read if you like Londo & G'Kar stuff; it's lovely, with some neat Narn worldbuilding), which was in turn inspired by one of my older ones. This is not meant to be in direct continuity with either hauntinghouses' fic or the other fic it was inspired by; it's off happily living its best life in its own AU 'verse.

Green Growing Things (Londo & G'Kar, 2800 wds)
It is post-canon, and there are gardens.

Previous poll review
In the Fitness trackers poll, 18% of respondents regularly use a fitness tracker to monitor their activity, 10% also use an app, and 16% use the pedometer on their phone; 48% said "other no", proving that I really should have got more granular (and emphatic) for non-adopters. Sorry! (For me, I enjoy some of the "gamification of exercise" parts, but when Fitbit eventually insists that I have to merge my data with my Google account in a few months, I plan to delete the app and use my device as a standalone thingummy.)

In ticky-boxes, FANDOM SPARKLES came second to hugs hugs hugs, 56% to 68%. "I genuflect to the sanctity of the ticky-box" is a reference to/misquote of a line from a Courtney Milan romance. Thank you for your votes! ♥

Reading
Almost nothing. Andrew and I started (barely) The Warrior's Apprentice by Bujold, the first Miles Vorkosigan book, in audio, read by Grover Gardner. And in ebook I've just started Courtney Milan's m/m novella, The Pursuit of... set during the American War of Independence.

Kdramas
I was sure I'd have drifted away from One Spring Night by now in favour of the new thing, but I'm semi-managing to watch that and Undercover Miss Hong in tandem. I love both of them in very different ways. OSN is slow and as full of social nuance as an Austen novel; UMH is silly corporate spy shenanigans and found family.

(In Undercover Miss Hong, the 35-year-old lead is undercover as a 20-year-old, and every time she glances around quickly and her shoulders move too, I think, yep, it's the stiff neck that gives you away. #relatable)

As predicted, Pru and I started Love Scout. I am immediately obsessed with it all over again, ahhhhhh! How am I going to bear the wait between watchings??

Other TV
A bit more of Ponies, but it's so tense that I keep avoiding it. It's only an 8-episode season, and we're halfway, so I should probably bite the bullet and power through.

Episode 2 of R.J. Decker was terribly written, to the point where I don't know if I can keep going. (I think the Movie Briefs podcast may have ruined me for PI shows: I kept going, "Is this witness tampering?" and "Stop revealing case information to suspects!")

More of The Pitt (I am worried about Robbie) (no spoilers, please!!) and Cheers.

And last night we watched the bizarre combination of:
  1. the pilot of The Madison, starring Michelle Pfeiffer and Kurt Russell, a gorgeously cinematic show about loss, grief, and New York "society" people dealing with nature in Montana. It's like the love child of A River Somewhere (Australian fly-fishing show which I happen to own on DVD), Schitt's Creek (but without the humour; just the rich people out of their comfort zone part), and [something dealing with partner-loss], and
  2. The Naked Gun, starring Liam Neeson and Pamela Anderson (surprisingly watchable; made us laugh).

We've also watched a bunch of stand-up lately: Marc Maron, Rose Matafeo, probably some others.

Audio entertainment
"Corporations have learned that when you have total buy-in, from everyone, and if you can make it impossible for people to not use your product, you determine what culture is. You just do." Gita Jackson on Tech Won't Save Us. (I am so grateful to Dreamwidth for not having an algorithm!)

Online life
Sign-ups are open for the 520 Day Guardian Reverse Exchange!! Yay!! This is our eighth year, and it's always a great time.

Writing/making things
I finished a round of rewrites on one of my started-for-Yuletide fics and sent it back to beta; now I need to apply the same rewriting strategy to my other started-for-Yuletide fic too. 520 Day assignments will out by the 8th, so that's my deadline for these: three weeks. In theory, that should be do-able.

I'm averaging one fic a month so far this year, which is pretty slow-paced for me, but it isn't nothing.

Good things
520 Day, yay!! FTH, eeee!! Writers' Hour continues to keep me showing up; it's a structure that works really well for me. Kdramas and those of you who recommend them to me. AO3 comments on some of my favourites of my fics. Sunday's long bike ride to buy the best hot cross buns didn't have any negative arm/wrist consequences.
