Harold Finch

First impression: From the very first episode, I provisionally liked Finch. Wanted to see more before making a definite impression.

Impression now: Aww, we have a complicated relationship. I like Finch. A lot. But sometimes, I found him downright infuriating. Like, Season 5 and not telling Fusco all that time? WTF was that?! How the hell does that make him safer? There are quite a few of Harold’s decisions that I find questionable.
But OTOH, there are so many things I love about him. For all his amazing intelligence, he is so very human. He is selfless and he honestly, deeply cares about his friends. Watching him with Grace, or the first moments with the Machine after it is “born”, you can’t help but love that soft side of him. His morals are a key aspect to his personality and he’s never okay with sacrificing a person; the same view that he passed on to the Machine. He’s a pacifist, and I may disagree sometimes but have to respect his views – he does want the best for mankind, and he is afraid of the possibility that releasing the Machine on people might do more bad than good. We open the series with Reese on the end of his rope, homeless and lost, but as we go on, it becomes clear that Harold is also looking for a certain redemption.
I really think he would be happy living a simple live as a teacher or something similar. Instead, he’s trying to save the world, carrying a terribly heavy burden. He’s had to make a lot of tough decisions and it took its toll on him. He’s a good person who tries very hard to do his best.

Favorite moment: Too many to count. Maybe, one of my most favorite moments of the show is end of Season 4, with the Machine “dying” and Harold talking to her – but it’s not really my favorite Harold moment.

Idea for a story: Just something happy. He doesn’t expect a happy ending for himself, he’d put everyone else first, and that’s why even more, I just want him to have something simple and good in his life.
Or maybe, some time down the future, I’d want him and the Machine to explore their relationship a bit. Play around, be friends without always worrying about saving the world.

Unpopular opinion: Not sure what’s unpopular here…

Favorite relationship: Harold&John, Harold&Root, Harold&the Machine, Harold&Elias…

Favorite headcanon: I’m not good at this head canon thing… I don’t think he goes back to working the numbers full-time after the series finale. He still helps, but eventually others take over and he retires, finds that happy life, and Machine/Root watches over him. And he lives happily ever after.
