First impression: Something along the lines of love this villain woman! So wonderfully crazy! And she had the great music theme as well… you just had to love that short music sequence that always told Root was around.
Impression now: Still absolutely love Root. I was skeptical when they were transitioning her from a villain to a hero, but then they actually pulled it off. Same as Shaw, she’s badass, dangerous, very sexy and very capable. Root is a genius who seems to be desperately in search of some higher meaning, and she has lost her faith in people… until the Machine, Harold and others restore her faith in humanity. I love how she never gives up, how ingenious she is and how deeply she comes to care for everyone on the team.
Favorite moment: So many of them!!! From the top of my head, Root blackmailing the Machine to rescue Shaw (by threatening to fall off the roof); Root telling Harold how him and his morals have made the Machine kind and sympathetic to people (or something along those lines); any Root/Shaw moment. (The whole If-or-Else and the ending. AWWWWW the feels!!!!)
Idea for a story: Root is found by Samaritan first. Does she ever realize she’s on the wrong side? (I think she is captured by Team Machine. Is fascinated by Harold and his “soft” Machine. Falls for Sameen. Betrays them for Samaritan. And because I’m a softie, she eventually saves them because Sameen and Harold’s morals get to her (and she nearly dies but doesn’t because Happy Ending!)
Unpopular opinion: Hmmm… Oh, I have one. I wasn’t enraged by the fact that Root died at the end. I was devastated, but at the same time, her death made sense from a storytelling POV, she died a hero, fighting for what she believed in, protecting the people she loved, and she was “reborn” in the Machine. You don’t get a better death than that.
