She’s so stupid. Who was she kidding – of course it was always going to end like this.

Idiot.

As if dating Caffrey hadn’t been bad enough. As if she had learned nothing. But no, Sara just had to go for the “bad boy” again. Or in this case, bad girl.

She – what the hell had she been thinking?! – she had allowed herself to fall for Alex. Become comfortable around her. Grow attached. She cleaned out a fucking drawer for her and why hadn’t she seen this coming?!

Now the painting that Sterling&Bosch insured is gone – and somehow, Sara already knew. She knew before she came to her apartment and found Alex’s things gone. She knew before she went to the hotel and discovered that “Miss Hunter” had checked out yesterday morning.

Alex who told her on day one that she didn’t do relationships. Alex who was even harder to tie down than Neal.

And she still feels her hands and kisses everywhere on her body. Her breasts, her face, her legs, everything and more that Alex had touched over and over again. Sara bites down hard on her lower lip. Just yesterday, she laughed as she sucked on Alex’s nipple, and she was free, cheerful, happy. Now she feels cheap and used, like a useless thing tossed in the trash and she just wants to laugh hysterically –

She misses her so much. That bitch left her and possibly cost Sara her job and she misses her as if her lungs got ripped out.

Apparently, the same way some abused people keep falling for new abusers, Sara keeps getting into relationships where people leave and lie to her. By now, she should really be used to it. By now, her walls should be so strong that it wouldn’t tear her up when it happens again.

If only.

She’ll track down the painting and save her job first. Then she’ll clear her apartment and her heart of any reminders that Alex ever existed. And then…

Never again.

Sara is done being a fool and a mark.

“The painting. Just like you asked.”

“You will excuse me if I don’t take your word for it. Vlad?”

“Suit yourself,” Alex shrugs as if bored, stepping aside to let the Russian gangster check the painting.

“It’s the real thing,” says Vlad after a few minutes of studying the panting with a magnifying glass.

Yusupov smiles. “Good! Now, Miss Hunter. I have another task for you.”

The emotional, irrational part of Alex wants to smash her fist into Yusupov’s face. She rules that part in. She’s always been good at that.

“There is another item that I want greatly. I have the floor plans and the list of the security measures here.”

“Let me see it.”

It seems Yusupov’s guys have been thorough. There are cameras, blind spots, guard schedules… Alex spends a few minutes going through the documents before the Russian grows inpatient. “Well? Can you get in?”

With a last quick glance at the plans, Alex turns back to the mob boss. “Yeah, I think so.”

“Good,” says Yusupov. “Then we have a deal.”

He doesn’t threaten her. She knows his reputation well enough; only someone suicidal would cross him. Alex was always smart enough to know when she was beaten. She was cautious, intelligent, rational…

Except with Sara.

Thirty-six hours ago, they were making love at Sara’s apartment. Alex can still feel the faint bruise that Sara’s lips left on her neck. That impulsive, useless part of her that would punch Yusupov wants to scream, and if she were someone else she’d tell Sara everything and beg her to to take her back, to give her a second chance.

Only she stands by her choices. She had to steal the painting and she couldn’t have Sara involving the authorities as she would have done. This was the one option that might not get either of them killed.

Sara will hate her. It’s the inevitable consequence and Alex would expect nothing else. She isn’t Caffrey to presume her betrayal will be forgiven just because she had her reasons for it.

There’s a reason why she works best alone.

Alex swallows the pain and rage and goes back to studying the plans.
